Transporting Memories
Discover more
'Transporting Memories' centres on cakes, a Polish Easter basket, family, and cherished memories.
The two bowls—one crafted from elm and the other from earthenware—are placed in a jute basket and hold two types of cakes (drożdżówki and babeczki). These cakes carry particular significance for me, evoking fond memories of home in Poland and the times I spent living with my grandmas. Whenever I visit Poland, I make sure to get these cakes and bring them back to England for my family. In this way, the basket becomes a vessel for both the cakes and the precious memories tied to them.
The basket draws inspiration from traditional Polish Easter baskets, which are filled with specific foods and taken to church for blessing. This connection emphasizes the cultural and personal importance of the cakes. The basket's open bottom, exposing the base of the wooden bowl, symbolizes the passage of time and the ongoing journey of transporting memories.
The top bowl is covered with a crochet napkin made by my great-grandmother, that my family uses to cover the Easter baskets. This napkin not only protects the cakes in the top bowl but also serves as a reminder of our family’s heritage.
