Design Donkey for Isokon

The brief for this project was to design and manufacture a new version of the Isokon Donkey, preserving its defining characteristics.

The Design Donkey takes inspiration from the Isokon Penguin Donkeys, adhering to their specific furniture typology—a portable, free-standing storage solution.

This redesigned version functions as a compact plywood storage unit, specifically crafted to hold essential arts and design supplies. It features dedicated compartments for A4 and A5 sheets, a shelf with sufficient height for items like paint pots and glue sticks, and a rounded base compartment ideal for storing pens, rulers, and tapes.

Additional storage is incorporated into the side panels using bungee elastic. One side panel is designed to hold rolled objects, such as magazines or cutting mats, while the other is tailored for smaller items like stationery and notes.

The side panels extend above the flat top, creating two handles that make the Design Donkey easy to transport. The flat top doubles as a workspace for quick tasks or as an additional storage area.

While initially conceived as a storage solution for art and design tools, the Design Donkey’s functionality extends beyond this context. It could also serve as a practical storage unit in a living room, holding essential items like remote controls and blankets.
